The results of the 18th Lok Sabha general elections 2024 mark the return of the coalition politics in India, with no political party having a clear majority. However, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), a pre-poll alliance, could gain a comfortable a majority to form the government. It is NDA in power again, but with a diminished BJP having 240 seats, unlike in 2014 & 2019 where BJP had a clear majority on its own. The government critically hinges on the support of BJP’s two NDA partners, Janata Dal United (JDU) from the north Indian state of Bihar and Telugudesam Party (TDP) from the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The Indian National Congress (INC)-led Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) has emerged as a strong opposition. Regional parties performed well and have emerged as key players in both the alliances NDA and INDIA.
